Chassis parts!

After a busy couple of weeks on eBay and then waiting on the man in brown to deliver the goods, I now have some of the parts I need to get a rolling chassis together.

XV parts


Main frame section, final drive unit, rear shock, swingarm and engine mounts. The later Virago 700/750/1000/1100 engines are compatible with the earlier mono-shock frame, as long as the early engine mounts are used as well.
I'm still waiting on the lower frame section that incorporates the swingarm pivot and a spoked rear wheel from a 96 Virago 535. Some machining and fabricating will be necessary to adapt the 535 spoked hub to the XV750 final drive unit, more info to follow.

I will be using KZ650/900 forks and trees, with a front wheel from a KZ650SR which I have left over from the Sportster project...

    ive just picked up an 82 xv750 for 1600usd that i plan to build into a cafe racer (hopefully for under 6000AUD). In my mind the frame modifications will be the most time consuming and technically important aspects of the build process, and i will be looking forward to seeing how you go about getting this done. Goodluck on the build mate, and may the bike-build-gods be on your side..

      Nice one mate! I bet you can do it for well under 6000.

      I'm currently designing a rear subframe but it's kind of up in the air, do I buy a seat then make a subframe to fit? Or make a subframe first and then make or buy a seat to fit that.

    I know that Greg - doc chops - has got a kit that he's looking at designing a few of and then selling off - but i dont know how much progress on that front just yet.

    The pics on that link give a bit more of an idea too, and you might be able to negotiate with Greg if you only want certain parts of the kit.
    On another note - I dont really think that making the vital stuff yourself- tank lift, subframe, battery box etc, would be that difficult.

    At the moment, im working on suspension, dropping the front and (probably replacing) and lifting the back. When i get to the seat and tank part i'll buy both the seat and the tank so i have them in my hands and can build and modify the frame around them. I like both the original motolanna seat that doc chops uses and i'll get either an original mojave tank or get one built out of fibreglass.

    The build is a big job, but i figure if i take it one job at a time, i'll get there.

      I saw that subframe kit he's been working on, looks excellent, but I'll be making my own.

      Now I have a seat unit (Legendary Motorcycles) and tank (82 750 Seca) I can start on the subframe, should be fairly straightforward. It'll probably be square section for simplicity's sake.

      I love the mojave tank look but damn they're so expensive these days, I remember when you could pick NOS up for $50 without a gas cap. Seen a few go on eBay recently for near $400 *choke*.

      Holy shit! Just saw that subframe on eBay, almost $800 for a bit of tubing??? cough*bullshit*cough

      Mine won't look as pretty but once the seat is on you can hardly see it anyway.
